A Message to Christians Who Support Gay Marriage

A Message to Christians Who Support Gay Marriage

PT 2 by Timothy Jerry

One of the more disturbing trends that I have noticed concerning the gay marriage debate, are the number of professing Christians that support the Supreme Courts ruling on the matter.

Many of these folks believe that people are born gay and that God has ordained their behavior. Adding to this confusion is the increased influence of liberal theology that has gained traction, even in Evangelical churches.

Proponents of liberal theology do not hold to the traditional Christian tenants of faith, that the Bible is inerrant and that as such is to be adhered to as God’s holy word. These folks propose that most of Scripture is to be viewed as symbolic and metaphoric. They believe that God used evolution to create the earth (a concept that is not supported by Scripture). They believe that Adam and Eve were not actual people, rather that the biblical account is to be seen as a metaphor.

Most people, who adhere to liberal theology, while professing Christians, are actually practical atheists. They profess to know Christ yet deny Him by their refusal to acknowledge His Lordship. Rather than measuring culture by the standards that are clearly set forth in God’s word, the truth of God’s word is bent to the standards of the culture and as such loses its’ power to transform lives.

“God’s Word will never pass away, but looking back to the Old Testament and since the time of Christ, with tears we must say that because of lack of fortitude and faithfulness on the part of God’s people, God’s Word has many times been allowed to be bent, to conform to the surrounding, passing, changing culture of that moment rather than to stand as the inerrant Word of God judging the form of the world spirit and the surrounding culture of that moment.” ― Francis A. Schaeffer, The Great Evangelical Disaster

This could not be any clearer than what we have witnessed when it comes to gay marriage. Entire denominations that once held to the authority of Scripture, have abandoned the word of God to embrace homosexuality and ordain ministers who are practicing homosexuals. This has taken place for no other reason than the fact that many Bible Schools have been infiltrated by liberal theologians.

Can a person be a practicing homosexual and a Christian?

Many people answer this question with a resounding “yes,” or “of course.” They are convinced that God has created people as homosexuals because they have same sex attractions.

Those who hold to this position are simply ignorant of what the Bible actually has to say about the subject of homosexuality, or have embraced the liberal theology position that Scripture is ever evolving and must change with the times. Yet the Bible in both the Old and New Testaments never suggests that homosexuality is anything other than sexually immorality.

One of the most notable passages that address homosexual behavior is found in Leviticus 18:22 “Do not practice homosexuality, having sex with another man as with a woman. It is a detestable sin.

If you read this passage in the context of the entire chapter you will notice that God is addressing the immoral sexual practices of the people in the land of Canaan. God does not want His people to be defiled by their behaviors. In this context He speaks of universal sexual behaviors that are unacceptable for God’s people both then and now.

Leviticus 18

“You must never have sexual relations with a close relative, for I am the Lord.

“Do not violate your father by having sexual relations with your mother. She is your mother; you must not have sexual relations with her.

“Do not have sexual relations with any of your father’s wives, for this would violate your father.

“Do not have sexual relations with your sister or half sister, whether she is your father’s daughter or your mother’s daughter, whether she was born into your household or someone else’s.

10 “Do not have sexual relations with your granddaughter, whether she is your son’s daughter or your daughter’s daughter, for this would violate yourself.

11 “Do not have sexual relations with your stepsister, the daughter of any of your father’s wives, for she is your sister.

12 “Do not have sexual relations with your father’s sister, for she is your father’s close relative.

13 “Do not have sexual relations with your mother’s sister, for she is your mother’s close relative.

14 “Do not violate your uncle, your father’s brother, by having sexual relations with his wife, for she is your aunt.

15 “Do not have sexual relations with your daughter-in-law; she is your son’s wife, so you must not have sexual relations with her.

16 “Do not have sexual relations with your brother’s wife, for this would violate your brother.

17 “Do not have sexual relations with both a woman and her daughter. And do not take her granddaughter, whether her son’s daughter or her daughter’s daughter, and have sexual relations with her. They are close relatives, and this would be a wicked act.

18 “While your wife is living, do not marry her sister and have sexual relations with her, for they would be rivals.

20 “Do not defile yourself by having sexual intercourse with your neighbor’s wife.

22 “Do not practice homosexuality, having sex with another man as with a woman. It is a detestable sin.

23 “A man must not defile himself by having sex with an animal. And a woman must not offer herself to a male animal to have intercourse with it. This is a perverse act.

Would we embrace a professing Christian who openly practiced incest today? How about a person who practiced adultery with another person’s spouse? We certainly would never approve or support a person who professed to be a Christian and yet openly admitted to having sexual relations with children or animals would we?

So why should we imagine that somehow homosexual behavior is the exception to this biblical litany of behaviors?

Jesus viewed homosexuality as sexual immorality.

People say that Jesus never spoke about homosexuality, arguing that it wasn’t a big deal to Him, or that His silence was an endorsement. Jesus also never addressed incest or bestiality either, because He was a first century Torah (biblical law) practicing Jew.

He was speaking primarily to Jewish people who would have been very familiar with the biblical standards for sexual immorality as described in Leviticus 18. He had no reason to address these issues because it would have been widely understood that homosexuality was immoral by God’s standards.

Jesus reaffirms God’s order for marriage.

Some Pharisees came and tried to trap him with this question: “Should a man be allowed to divorce his wife for just any reason?” “Haven’t you read the Scriptures?” Jesus replied. “They record that from the beginning ‘God made them male and female.’ And he said, “‘This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.’ Since they are no longer two but one, let no one split apart what God has joined together.” Matthew 19:3-6 (NLT)

You will notice that Jesus confirmed that God set forth His ordained order from the creation of the world. This order was one man and one woman for life.

If anything, Jesus omission of homosexuality establishes the fact that this practice has never been a part of God’s design for human beings.

Paul reconfirmed what the Old Testament and Jesus proclaimed.

Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 (NKJV)

You will notice that Paul lists homosexuality along with the sins of fornication (sex outside of the confines of marriage) and adultery, the same sins as found in Leviticus 18.

Nowhere in the Bible do we ever see any positive reference to homosexuality. Nowhere does the Bible ever suggest that people are born gay or that homosexual behavior is allowed or endorsed by God, because it is not.

Be careful that you are not deceived.

Jesus and the apostles all warned us to be careful so that we would not be deceived. Those who have come to believe that they can habitually practice homosexuality without any intentions of repenting and still live the Christian life are deceived.

And Jesus answered and said to them: “Take heed that no one deceives you.” Matthew 24:4 (NKJV)

Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. 1 Corinthians 3:18 (NKJV)

Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Ephesians 5:6 (NKJV)

Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous.      1 John 3:7

I am not talking about the person who is being tempted by same sex attractions yet knows that these desires are ungodly and is resisting them. We are all tempted to do ungodly things, but we are not in sin unless we yield to those temptations. Even if you fall prey to temptation, there is forgiveness and restoration through Christ, if you will repent by turning from sin.

Christ came to save us from our sin.

One of the fundamental truths of the gospel itself is that Jesus Christ came to seek and to save the lost.

“…for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” Luke 19:10 (NKJV)

If Jesus came to seek and to save what was lost, just exactly what did He come to save us from? The obvious answer is the consequences of our sin.

In Matthew’s gospel account we are introduced to the mission of Jesus from the time of His birth.

And she (Mary) will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21 (NKJV)

Jesus came to save us from our sins, never to leave us in our sins. The message and power of the gospel is that God through the work of his son Jesus, the Christ would save lost humanity from their sins and transform their lives.

One of the most detrimental messages that liberal theology presents to people is that we don’t need to be transformed because human beings are fundamentally good. The reoccurring message in these camps is that we are not really fallen beings in need of God’s mercy and forgiveness, but simply flawed.

Their remedy for our condition is not humility and repentance for our sin against God. Instead we simply need more education and enlightenment. These preachers have more in common with New Age mystics than ministers of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

But God shows his anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people who suppress the truth by their wickedness. Romans 1:18 (NLT)

We must resist ungodly desires.

There is not a bit of conclusive evidence from a natural, psychological or biblical perspective that people are born gay. People have concluded that they were born that way because they may have had same sex attractions from the time that they were young.

What we must recognize is the reality that we are living in a fallen sinful world, that since the creation and fall of man has been continually turning further from God’s will. Human beings are not simply flawed; we are sinful, and as such have any number of ungodly desires that draw us away from God’s standard of truth.

Every person, if they are honest, have ungodly desires that they are drawn towards. Pedophiles have an attraction to children, yet we would not suggest that this is natural would we? All of us have ungodly appetites that must be resisted and submitted to God’s will whether we are Christians or not.

The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. Galatians 5:17 (NLT)

Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. Galatians 5:19-20 (NLT)

Once again, there is a vast difference between someone who struggles with temptations to practice these types of behaviors and the person who willfully is engaged is these things without any sense of remorse or desire to repent. The apostle Paul makes it very clear that as Christians we cannot simply give into the ungodly appetites of our desires.

The Church must stand against the darkness.

The most disturbing aspect of the gay marriage issue is the sad compromise that has taken place among so many professing Christians. In the past the body of Christ has stood against this ungodly behavior and spoken with a unified voice against such practices. When preachers compromise and embrace darkness this strengthens the resolve of the wicked, deceives the weak and undermines the authority of God’s word.

If the godly give in to the wicked, it’s like polluting a fountain or muddying a spring. Proverbs 24:26 (NLT)

“Truth carries with it confrontation. Truth demands confrontation; loving confrontation, but confrontation nevertheless.” ― Francis A. Schaeffer, The Great Evangelical Disaster
